Imagery: The most powerful language of the 21st century

What is Imagery? It is a flow of thoughts that can be seen, heard, felt, smelled or tasted in one's imagination.

Imagery has been said to be:

- The language of the right brain

- The language of the nervous system

- The language of the emotions

- The language of the unconscious and

- The interface between mind and body.

Imagery allows us to access deeper wisdom stored in the body—helping us uncover insights, shift emotions, and tap into hidden potential.

Like any language, it can be learned and mastered.

Recognized as one of the most effective mind-body healing techniques, imagery unlocks the untapped resources of the mind, making it a powerful tool for transformation.

Life Changing Images Conjured Up by My Clients

✨ Real Clients, Real Transformations

These guided imagery sessions changed more than thoughts—

they opened doors to healing, confidence, and purpose.

Stained Wedding Dress

She was happily married, yet struggled to enjoy intimacy. She wanted to change that.

During our session, an image surfaced in her mind—a wedding dress stained with blood. Though her husband had been her first, she realized she still carried resentment from that experience.

Through guided imagery, we reframed the past, releasing the emotional weight it carried.

Not long after, she called me from a vacation spot—excited and overjoyed. She had just experienced a beautiful, intimate weekend with her husband.

She Could Not Loose Weight

She had tried every diet and exercise plan, but nothing seemed to work.

Then, during a session, an unexpected image surfaced—an old galleon sailing from Europe to America, carrying Pilgrims escaping the Old Continent.

She suddenly felt the weight of ancestral memory—a deep, inherited fear of starvation, passed down through generations. Her body had been holding onto this survival instinct, making her feel constantly deprived no matter how much she ate.

Once she uncovered and released this hidden pattern, everything changed. Her diet and exercise efforts finally started working.

His Business Was Stagnating

No matter what he tried, his businesses either stagnated or floundered. He couldn’t seem to break through and wanted to understand why.
During our session, his subconscious revealed itself in the form of a wise old man—a guide within his own mind. The message was clear:
He was punishing himself for his past addictions.
At that moment, he faced a choice point—continue down the same path, break free from the addictions, or shift the belief that he deserved to struggle.
With awareness comes power. The question was—would he choose to step into success?

Overcoming Dental Anxiety with Imagery

She needed major dental work but dreaded the thought. She had postponed it for as long as possible—until the pain became too much to bear. Could imagery help her?

During our session, a calming scene emerged in her mind—a peaceful, sunlit beach.

☀️ The sun was warm.
🌊 Gentle waves lapped at the shore.🕊️ Seagulls soared overhead.
🌴 The temperature was perfect.

With this vivid imagery, her fear melted away.

Not only did she stop dreading her dental visits, but she soon found herself relaxing and enjoying her appointments.

From Victim to Empowered: Harnessing Inner Strength

She was caught in a nasty divorce and custody battle, dreading the never-ending court hearings where she felt powerless and victimized.

She needed empowerment.

During our session, an image surfaced—herself in a martial arts class. She was a black belt, strong and focused.

Through guided imagery, she practiced stepping into that state—reclaiming the confidence, discipline, and power she felt on the mat and bringing it into the courtroom.

She walked in assertive, calm, and unshakable.

She was no longer a victim. She was in control.

Breaking Free from Darkness

A young man in his early twenties was referred to me by a concerned client—she feared he was on the verge of suicide.

We talked for a while. He was willing to relax and reflect on the moments in his life when he had felt truly happy.

As he shared his experiences, I noticed a pattern—the only time he felt deeply depressed, to the point of suicidal thoughts, was when he was living with his aunt.

The darkness she carried had been passed on to him.

With this realization, he made a powerful choice: to move away and return to a place where he had once been happy.

Sometimes, a shift in environment can make all the difference.

She Wanted to Smoke,

She Wanted to Quit

Two opposing desires battled within her.

She wanted to smoke—she truly loved it.
She wanted to quit—as a therapist, she felt it set a bad example, and she knew it wasn’t healthy.

Through guided dialogue, we spoke to both parts of her mind:

🗣️ The part that loved smoking explained why it held on.
🗣️ The part that wanted to quit voiced its concerns.

Rather than fighting each other, they negotiated a compromise—she would allow herself to smoke five cigarettes on Saturdays.

Both sides were satisfied.

She was no longer a chain smoker…And the parts lived happily ever after.

Diagnosed with Clinical Depression

For five long years, she lived in a deep, black hole of depression.

Over the course of a few sessions, we gently and safely explored this darkness. As we did, memories of pain and sadness began to surface—one by one.

Each time her subconscious brought up an event, something shifted.

🖤 Black turned to dark gray…
🌑 Dark gray softened into light gray
☀️ Until, finally, she surfaced in the light.

The clinical depression was gone.

Sometimes, healing isn’t about escaping the darkness—it’s about bringing light into it.

Neck Pain After an Accident

She was a chiropractor, yet no technique or adjustment could relieve the persistent neck pain that followed a car accident.

Her head was in constant motion, trapped in painful spasms.

I suggested tapping into the brain’s natural ability to produce morphine-like substances, known to be even stronger than opiates. But she chose a different route.

In her imagination, she became a witch, crafting her own powerful elixir—a blend of:

🌿 Rare herbs
🐸 Frog and bat saliva
🐍 Snake venom
🦉 Wing of an owl

She drank her mystical potion in her mind…

And her head stopped bobbing.

The power of the mind is limitless—sometimes, all it takes is the right story to create healing.

He Wanted a Breakthrough on All Levels

He called me from the gym, frustrated and at his breaking point. He was trying to exercise—but something inside him was holding him back.

He wanted change. NOW.

We had already worked together in a few sessions, and he had:

Broken through his financial glass ceiling, surpassing $100,000
Ended a toxic relationship that was dragging him down

But something deeper was still in the way.

As a child, he had been severely punished every time he accomplished something good. His unconscious mind had learned a dangerous lesson:

🏋️‍♂️ If he got into great physical shape, punishment would follow.

In one session, we dissolved that fear—rewriting the old script.

He stepped into his full potential and became the athlete he had always wanted to be.

Other Examples of Imagery

From Dr. Martin Rossman, M.D.

Co-Founder of the Academy For Guided Imagery(sm) from which I graduated in 1998

Examples from Self-Healing, Published by Awareness Press (used with permission)

"While yours is the most important image, a few examples of images that others have created might help you realize how different and personal imagery can be and still be effective.

Heading

Consider 3 people with back problems.

An orthopedic surgeon friend of mine had a severely herniated lumbar disk. He was a very progressive surgeon who had used hypnosis to help his patients recover quickly from surgery, and he believed in the power of the mind to assist healing. He doubted, however, that imagery could help repair a ruptured intervertebral disk, but he wanted to do anything he could to avoid surgery. He was able to visualize the disk quite well, since he had seen so many of them in his work. He described it as a fibrous sack, whose contents had "blown out" and were now pressing on a nerve in his back. He couldn't imagine a satisfactory way for it to be repaired without surgery, and became increasingly frustrated. Finally, he decided to relax very deeply and see if the image could change by itself. Suddenly he saw a vivid image of the center of the disk being sucked back into the sack, and the tear sealing itself up like the diaphragm of a camera. The image was so clear it startled him. He was even more startled to find that after this session he was greatly relieved of pain and was able to walk without pain down his leg for the first time in weeks. He went on to recover completely without surgery, a fact that has both pleased and amazed him since.

Another friend and patient with a recurring back problem would imagine a huge rope knot representing the muscle spasms in his back. As he relaxed, he could visualize the knot loosening and found that his back muscles completely relaxed by the time he was able to imagine the knot untied.

A third patient with a one-year history of severe unremitting back pain imagined a knife stabbing him in the back. In guided imagery, he was asked to look at who put the knife there, and he saw his ex-business partner who had stolen from and ruined their business. A brief course of counseling sessions helped him express and come to terms with the feelings of anger and loss that he had been holding inside, and his back pain disappeared as he worked through his feelings.

More Examples from Dr. Rossman

Inflamed Wrist

A man with a painfully inflamed wrist imagined his wrist bones having sharp, jagged edges that grated on each other as he used his hand. In contrast, the image of his normal wrist included round bones, with rubber and cotton cushions between them, allowing smooth, painless movements. In his Healing Imagery, he imagined gently placing cushions and supports between the bones of the painful wrist and was able to greatly reduce his discomfort as his wrist healed. His imagery was not anatomically correct, yet it was effective in reducing his pain.

Ulcerative Colitis

A young man with ulcerative colitis had been having painful abdominal cramping and bleeding from his rectum for two months. Medication was not helping, and he wanted to avoid cortisone if he could. He imagined his colon being red, raw and irritable. He said it seemed "uptight" and "oversensitive." As he relaxed with his hands on his abdomen, he imagined his hand melting into his body and lovingly stroking and massaging his colon. He imagined his colon relaxing and resting in his hands. At the same time, he felt a pleasant sense of warmth in his belly, and imagined fresh, healthy blood flowing to his colon, refreshing, cleansing, and healing it. In two days he was free of symptoms. Three weeks later, his gastro-enterologist said his colon appeared to be completely healed

Herniated Disk

A sixty-five-year-old retired heavy equipment operator with a herniated disk in his back imagined a tiny work crew inserting house-lifting jacks between his vertebrae. He then imagined them clearing out the old "busted" disk and installing a fresh one, which he visualized as a small, very tough rubber ball. When the "work crew" lowered the top vertebra, the ball flattened into a cylindrical shock absorber, which maintained the space between the bones. He even imagined it cushioning the joint as he walked. He found this image to be a consistently effective way to relieve his back pain and sciatica.

Peptic Ulcer

A fifty-two-year-old businessman with a peptic ulcer visualized spraying the inside of his stomach and intestines with a cooling white foam three times a day between meals. He was able not only to relieve his pain but heal quickly, discontinued the ulcer medications, and remained free of ulcers through several stressful years.

Sinus Headache

A mother of three with a week-long sinus headache focused on her pain and saw a large eye with wings on either side. As she watched it, it suddenly flew away, and a large glob of mucus fell into the back of her throat. She was surprised to sit up and find that her headache was relieved. Neither she, nor I ever understood the significance of the symbol. It seemed as if the imagery itself produced relief.

Stress

A twenty-seven-year-old junior executive was having anxiety attacks at work. As he relaxed and asked for an image for his anxiety, he saw a frenetic honeybee, flying about in an agitated state. The bee seemed scattered and didn't seem to have any pattern or direction in its movement. The image for healing that came to him was a rose. He imagined holding the rose out to the bee, and it came over and began collecting nectar. The bee then seemed more relaxed and content, and so did the young man. He found this simple visualization calming and centering and used it for a few minutes at a time whenever he began.

Sometimes, active imagery will suffice to relieve pain and stimulate healing, while in other cases receptive imagery

will point to physical, emotional, or situational problems

that need resolution before healing can proceed.

While "create" is not quite the right word - "receive" might be better - these images came from concentrating on the problem and being receptive to the images that formed.

Your Sub/Unconscious Affects Your Daily Life

The Sub/Unconscious Mind is like a 2-year-old

with a magic wand.

It doesn’t have a moral compass—just pure, raw creativity.

Feed it clear imagery and emotion... and it will go to work.

The Power of Imagery in Healing and Transformation

Imagery is more than just visualization—it is a powerful tool that can:

Reveal the source of a problem or symptom
Provide deep insights into life situations
Promote relaxation and relieve stress
Slow down heart rate and regulate the nervous system
Stimulate the immune system and accelerate healing
Reduce pain and minimize side effects
Balance emotions and resolve inner conflicts
Shift hormone and neurotransmitter levels for better well-being
Enhance intuition and goal-setting for greater success

A Direct Link to the Body’s Healing Systems

Imagery has powerful physiological effects that directly influence the body’s natural ability to heal.

Many times, emotions and creative energy have been suppressed and locked within the body, only to resurface years later as uncomfortable symptoms—seeking release.

Through guided imagery, these hidden energies can be safely acknowledged, processed, and transformed into healing and growth.

You Already Use Imagery Every Day

Everyone uses imagery—all the time.

Do you ever worry? That’s imagery—the negative kind.

If I were to say, “Don’t think about an elephant!”What just popped into your mind?

If I asked you to close your eyes and describe your living room or a home you lived in as a child… you’d be using imagery.

We do this constantly, without even realizing it.

The difference? Most people have never been trained to use imagery to their advantage.

Imagine what’s possible when you learn to harness this natural ability—to heal, grow, and create the life you want.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Whether you’re facing chronic pain, emotional burnout, or spiritual confusion—I’m here to help you find clarity, ease, and direction.
